Philips Zoom! Whitening – The most innovative formula in take-home teeth whitening

Published: 25 November 2021

Teeth whitening is a great way to improve your smile without causing any long-term damage to the teeth. Whitening is a safe and effective procedure when carried out by a Dentist or Dental Hygienist within a dental practice.  At Clyde Munro, we offer one of the best teeth whitening systems available, Philips Zoom! whitening, which can be carried out in the privacy of your own home, at your convenience.

Do I need to whiten my teeth?

There are two different types of staining which can make our teeth appear darker in colour:

Extrinsic staining – This type of staining is often caused by lifestyle factors such as dark foods and drinks e.g. tea, coffee, red wine and smoking. It can be removed through professional cleaning.

Intrinsic staining – This type of staining occurs within the tooth structure and is not possible to remove through cleaning. Intrinsic stains require professional teeth whitening to improve the shade of the teeth.

Why Philips Zoom?

Philips Zoom! whitening is unique because it contains three ingredients aimed at reducing sensitivity and improving the final result. These three ingredients are: Potassium Nitrate, Fluoride and Amorphous Calcium Phosphate (ACP). Philips Zoom! is the only whitening to contain ACP. It is a fantastic ingredient for preventing sensitivity and giving the teeth an extra shine. Temporary sensitivity is common during whitening, but it can be managed very easily with these three ingredients, we call them the Power of Three.

How does teeth whitening work?

Hydrogen Peroxide is the active ingredient in professional teeth whitening. It works by gently breaking up double carbon bonds which make up stain molecules. By breaking up these molecules they appear colourless and look whiter. When used correctly and in the dosage provided by a dental professional, teeth whitening does not damage the teeth.  Philips Zoom! whitening is available as a take-home treatment or as a combination treatment. Both involve visiting a dental practice to have custom whitening trays made to fit your teeth perfectly. If you opt for take-home whitening your dental practice will provide you with a Philips Zoom! whitening kit and will give you instructions on how to wear your trays. You will start to see results within 3 days, the final result often shows after a couple of weeks.

If you would like to speed up the whitening process, you can have the combination treatment which involves an hour under the Philips Whitespeed lamp to accelerate the whitening followed by a few days of take-home whitening. The result from whitening is permanent however lifestyle factors can stain the teeth over time. It is recommended that you keep your whitening trays to top up every 6-12 months.

Why do I need to have my teeth whitened at the dentist?

Before your teeth can be whitened, they need to be clean and healthy. Dental professionals spend years training to identify any problems in the mouth and will ensure you are suitable and safe to go ahead with whitening. Teeth whitening that takes place outside of a dental practice is not regulated and therefore it is not known what products are being used and whether these are safe.

There have been many cases of burns and severe sensitivity which have required intervention following teeth whitening from someone who is not suitably qualified. Your teeth and smile are important, so it is vital that any dental treatment, including teeth whitening, is carried out by a dental professional with the suitable qualifications and experience to look after them.

At Clyde Munro Dental Group, our dentists are trained to provide Philips Zoom! whitening. If you are interested in whitening your teeth, find your nearest Clyde Munro practice to book your teeth whitening consultation.
