Straightening Teeth Without Braces – Alternative Solutions

Published: 27 August 2025

If you live in the UK and have thought about teeth straightening treatment, you’re not alone. According to the British Orthodontic Society, there have been notable rises in adults seeking private orthodontic care lately.

However, while teeth straightening is undoubtedly more popular, for many, it remains strongly associated with fixed braces, which, while effective, have undoubtedly decreased in popularity over the years, primarily due to their lack of aesthetic appeal. However, they are recommended in certain cases.

The good news is that effective alternatives to regular braces, which are becoming increasingly popular, are now available: SureSmile and Invisalign clear aligners are an example.

In this blog, we’ll provide an overview of teeth straightening and its benefits before exploring these popular alternatives to fixed braces and helping you decide which option is right for you.

Why undergo teeth straightening treatment?

Teeth straightening treatment is popular for various reasons.

Besides aesthetic benefits, such as boosted confidence from a straighter, more natural-looking smile, it also offers several functional advantages.

This includes reducing the risk of oral disease and infection by being easier to clean, an improved bite for easier chewing and digestion, and even better speech in more pronounced cases of misalignment.

How long do teeth straightening treatments take?

The duration required to straighten your teeth depends on your chosen treatment and the level of misalignment. Depending on these factors, the process can take anywhere from six months to two years.

It is important to note that your timeline will depend entirely on personal discipline in maintaining the alignment schedule and your chosen alignment apparatus.

Choosing the right teeth straightening option

Teeth straightening can be achieved in various ways, depending on your chosen treatment. The main options available in the UK are:

Your needs and preferences will guide you to the most suitable treatment. Your orthodontist can discuss appropriate teeth straightening options with you.

Preparation for alignment treatment

Although each treatment type will be recommended based on your needs and preferences, the preparation process remains similar across treatments.

It begins by taking a scan or impression of your mouth, x-rays and various measurements to assess the extent of alignment measures required. Initial assessments of general oral hygiene will also be taken into account. From here, your orthodontist can estimate the cost and treatment length.

Throughout your treatment, your oral health and overall alignment progress will be regularly monitored to ensure the process proceeds smoothly.

If your aligners are damaged or lost, it may result in additional costs and delay the realignment.

Alternatives to fixed braces

Although metal braces can effectively straighten teeth, their aesthetic appeal compared to newer options has reduced their popularity.

While they may still be considered the most suitable choice for more complex cases, the decision about the type of alignment device is often down to personal preference.

If you want to enhance your smile without choosing fixed braces, there are two popular options available:

Invisalign or SureSmile clear aligners

An incredibly discreet method, clear aligners are, unsurprisingly, almost invisible, and it is perhaps the most well-known alternative to fixed braces.

Clear aligners gradually realign your teeth using a set of clear aligners. Each set is worn for two to three weeks, and after each increment is completed, your dentist will provide you with a new set of aligners.

How long does Invisalign clear aligner treatment take?

This gradual process straightens teeth while minimising discomfort from moving teeth. Treatment typically lasts between 6 and 18 months.

To ensure that the alignment timeline is followed and to prevent regression, aligners should only be removed when consuming food and drink (except water), for brushing and flossing, and occasionally for social engagements.

However, this removal period should not exceed three to four hours, ideally less than two hours per day.

Maintaining your Invisalign clear aligners

To ensure correct maintenance of your aligners, clean them after meals with lukewarm water (do not use hot water as this can damage the aligner), a soft toothbrush, and antibacterial soap.

Rinse and dry before returning to your mouth.

What type of issues can clear aligners fix?

While not quite as broad in its use as fixed braces, Invisalign clear aligners remain a versatile choice.

It can be used for mild to moderately complex alignment treatment and can even address issues such as rotated teeth (up to 20 degrees) and severe crowding.

For specific guidance, we recommend discussing it with your orthodontist.

Clear aligners cost

Finally, costs can vary significantly depending on the level of realignment needed.

As a rough estimate, individuals considering Invisalign clear aligners can expect to pay between £1,500 and £4,500.
