Gum Disease Prevention

Healthy gums are the foundation of a healthy smile.

Signs and symptoms of gum disease

Gum disease (also known as periodontal disease) is one of the most common oral health conditions in the UK — but it’s also one of the most preventable. It starts with gingivitis, an inflammation of the gums caused by plaque build-up. If left untreated, it can progress to periodontitis, where the supporting bone around the teeth begins to break down, leading to tooth movement or loss.

Early gum disease often develops quietly, but common warning signs include:

  • Red, swollen or tender gums
  • Bleeding when brushing or flossing
  • Persistent bad breath or a bad taste in the mouth
  • Gum recession (teeth appearing longer)
  • Loose teeth or gaps developing between teeth

If you notice any of these symptoms, book an appointment with your dentist or hygienist as soon as possible. Early treatment can reverse gingivitis.

Our approach to gum disease treatment

Our dentists and hygienists work together to manage gum disease with evidence-based care and modern technology.

Your treatment may include:

  • Comprehensive gum health assessment using detailed pocket measurements and imaging
  • Professional deep cleaning (root surface debridement) to remove bacteria below the gum line
  • Personalised oral hygiene guidance to help you maintain results at home
  • Review appointments to track improvement and adjust treatment as needed
  • Referral to a specialist periodontist at one of our other practices if your condition requires advanced care

Our goal is to stop the progression of gum disease, restore gum health, and help you keep your natural teeth for life.

Prevention is key

The best way to protect your gums is through regular hygiene appointments and daily home care. Brushing twice a day, cleaning between teeth, and visiting your hygienist every 3-6 months can dramatically reduce your risk of gum disease and tooth loss.

Private treatment availability

Gum disease treatment and hygiene care are covered to an extent on the NHS, but private services are also available for more comprehensive care. This allows us to offer longer appointments and tailored care using advanced techniques that aren’t covered under standard NHS treatment plans.
